#2 EMDR: Transforming Trauma Through Eye Movements
From October 21st to October 26th, 2023, I found myself in the midst of an incredible journey of self-discovery and wonderful insights as I participated in an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) course, facilitated by two skilled EMDR trainers from the Association EMDR Netherlands (VEN). What I learned in five days surpassed all my expectations and has permanently altered my perspective on possibilities within trauma therapy, and more specifically EMDR. Now, more than a month later, I reflect on my learning experience while also offering glimpses into how my clients experienced EMDR.
EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on processing traumatic memories. During the course, I learnt about the theory and practice of EMDR, quickly discovering how effective this approach can be. It was inspiring to witness how EMDR, as a therapeutic method, has the capacity to transform people's lives. However, what made this course truly unforgettable was the opportunity to experience EMDR firsthand.
As a therapist, I had to embrace my own vulnerability and open up to my own traumatic memories, in order to process them. The experience was nothing short of astonishing. The simple act of following fingers of a colleague therapist with my eyes, a distinctive technique in EMDR, proved to be a powerful tool in reducing the intensity and impact of my traumatic memories. It was almost unbelievable to see how these memories, which had haunted me for years, suddenly became less frightening and overwhelming.
What makes all of this particularly significant is when I could put into practice what I learnt during the course shortly after with my own clients. Initially hesitant and filled with doubts regarding my capacity to manage the intensity of traumatic experiences and the potential effects of EMDR on clients, I nevertheless remained committed to helping them. I provided psychoeducation about EMDR, encouraged clients to engage in preparatory readings and thoughtful consideration before initiating any EMDR sessions. In each case, clients willingly agreed as they were open to finding help in reprocessing their trauma.
I am grateful for the trust clients placed in me, allowing me to guide them through a process that demanded courage and vulnerability. I am pleased to share that we witnessed noteworthy reductions in the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, as well as a decrease in overall tension and anxiety among all of my clients so far.
This EMDR course not only equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills as a therapist but also deeply touched me personally. My journey with EMDR has just begun, with a specialization scheduled for March 2025. I find great satisfaction in knowing that I can truly contribute to making a noticeable and positive impact in the lives of my clients. Clients are often left astounded by the remarkable effectiveness of EMDR in alleviating the emotional intensity associated with recalling a traumatic experience. Frankly, I share in their amazement and will continue educating myself to deliver the best practices.
